The Psychiatric Advanced Practice RN I position reports clinically and administratively to the Medical Director. May also report to another supervisory physician as delegated by the Medical Director for clinical supervision. Works in collaboration with the unit treatment team. Provides highly responsible psychiatric care for the adolescents assigned to The Waco Center For Youth (WCY) through evaluation, assessment, examination, diagnosis, treatment and referral. Documents in the record of persons served the information necessary to demonstrate the provision of quality care and to meet standards established by the Joint Commission, CMS, HHSC, WCY, etc. Actively participates in the Clinical Performance Improvement (CPI) program. Must maintain licensure necessary to practice advanced practice nursing in the State of Texas; completes the required number on continuing nursing education (CNE)'s as mandated by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. Must understand that duties, location of work and shift patterns are subject to change as determined by WCY Administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Must understand that duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Supports the mission and vision of the facility towards recovery care services.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
1. Conducts and documents in an electronic medical record complete psychiatric evaluations, mental status examinations of newly admitted/transferred patients and annual examinations of current patients. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies and referrals for general, other specialized medical care, and other appropriate psychosurgical patients.
2. Plans and implements the care of a patient as assigned by Unit Medical Director, Program Director, Treatment Team or upon request. Collaborates with a treatment team to design person-centered treatment plan 15%
3. Utilizes knowledge of present community standards of psychiatric practice, HHSC, Joint Commission, Medicare and WCY standards, and peer review in the individualized treatment to all patients.
4. Performs progress notes at appropriate intervals and frequency as indicated by the patient's clinical condition, WCY standards, and peer review in the individualized treatment to all patients.
5. Attends and documents sufficient continuing nursing education within specialty which is approved by the Medical Director to maintain licensure and is in accordance with the State Board of Nursing. Meets requirements as outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws. Maintains current State Board of Nursing licensure and appropriate psychiatric nurse certification.
6. Certifies time, ensures training is current through iLearn and instructor led training, responds to emails in a timely manner, and communicates receipt of subpoenas, appropriate external contacts impacting hospital operations. Discloses outside employment to ensure there are no conflicts of interest
7. May prescribe medication under protocol guidelines, departmental medication rules, and upon approval by the Medical Staff Executive Committee.
8. Obtains and interprets laboratory tests according to procedures and practices with the consultation of a supervising physician;
9. Initiates or modifies medical treatment when and to the extent authorized by the treating physician;
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Knowledge of psychiatric principles, practices and methods, preferably with some experience and understanding of the treatment of adolescents.
2. Knowledge of principles of the development, implementation and documentation of Individualized care and treatment plans. Skill in the care and treatment of patients.
3. Skill in the use of medical and psychiatric diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment.
4. Ability to examine, assess and treat mental disorders.
5. Ability to interpret psychological reports.
6. Ability to prepare and supervise preparation of case histories and medical records of patients. Understanding of the role of medical ethics in the practice of psychiatric nursing and the Interrelationship of the law.
7. Ability to assume leadership roles, including serving as leader of a multi-disciplinary treatment team.
8. Ability to code and bill for services provided and documented.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Registered and licensed in Texas as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with a specialty as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Salary Note: The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.

Waco Center for Youth is a psychiatric residential treatment facility that serves teen-agers, ages 13 through 17, with emotional difficulties and/or behavioral problems. Waco Center for Youth bases its treatment philosophy on the belief that both behavior change and an understanding of self and others are equally important in achieving significant long-term success in treatment. The mission of Waco Center for Youth is "to give each youth a chance for change" by providing comprehensive psychiatric residential treatment services to emotionally disturbed adolescents of the state of Texas. The facility is operated by the State Hospital System and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Facilities.
