Mechanic Technicians perform, diagnosis, repair, and provide preventive maintenance on Metro Transit buses, cars, trucks, and equipment. They also remanufacture and rebuild components to the manufactures specifications; fabricates/machines/designs parts as needed and provides welding and painting services.
Go Greener! Leading the transit industry in the reduction of diesel exhaust emissions by utilizing alternative propulsion and fuel technologies. Metro Transit operates clean diesel, diesel/electric hybrid, and battery electric propulsion systems.
Advanced Vehicle Technology: Experience in Go Greener technology; help support the first battery-electric New Flyer 60-foot articulated buses in the state. Today's modern buses are the most technologically advanced buses ever, equipped with multiplexing, J1939 CAN communications and electric powered accessories. These advanced technologies require troubleshooting using computer based diagnostic software.
Excellent Facilities: Bus Maintenance facilities offer heated climate control and good lighting. Other facility amenities include vehicle ventilation, vehicle lifts and hoists and fall protection.
Comprehensive Training Program: Employees are trained on all facets of bus maintenance processes, procedures and technologies.
Pay Rate:
1st year = $27.28 / hour
2nd year = $28.88 / hour
3rd year = $30.49 / hour
4th year = $32.09 / hour
An eligibility list will be created to fill current and future openings in 2019. Positions offered will be for second or third shift only.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
Associate Degree or two (2) year college or vocational school program in Diesel Mechanics or related field.
OR
High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of full time professional vehicle troubleshooting and repair experience as a mechanic within the last 10 years.
License Requirements:
Valid Commercial Driver's License - Class A with passenger endorsement and an acceptable driving record.
OR
Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License - Class A with passenger endorsement within 14 days of hire through Metro Transit's Instruction Center.

What your work environment would be?
Work is performed in a maintenance garage setting. This position may require working in wet or hot, humid non-weather conditions and in high precarious places up to two thirds (2/3) of the time. This position may also require, up to one third (1/3) of the time, working in outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and work with explosives.
Physical Requirements: This position may require, up to two thirds (2/3) of the time, standing, walking, talking or hearing using hands to finger, handle or feeling and reaching with hands and arms, lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. Two thirds (2/3) or more of time may be used to work near moving parts or equipment in the presence of fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations. May also be required to lift more than 100 pounds with assistance.
PERFORMANCE EXAM INFORMATION:
As a candidate for employment, you will need to demonstrate your basic mechanical knowledge, skills and abilities by performing three (3) individual tests. The tests involve a mechanical hands-on performance test, an electrical circuit diagnostic troubleshooting test, and a written mechanical knowledge-based test.
The mechanical skill test consists of disassembly and assembly of a mechanical system with the use of hand tools and an instruction aid. This test is given to determine if the individual can correctly complete the hands-on task by carefully reading, following and completing each instruction as they are stated in the prepared manual.
The electrical skill test consists of diagnosing a faulty direct current (DC) electrical circuit and/or its components. This test is given to determine if the individual can correctly troubleshoot a defective electrical circuit by using an electrical schematic, and a digital volt-ohm multi-meter (DVOM) to correctly diagnose the fault.
The written knowledge-based test is multiple-choice and given to determine the level of mechanical knowledge the individual candidate has in the following core systems:
* Air brakes
* Internal combustion engines
* Electrical, electronic and electric motors
* Heavy-duty drive train
* Heavy-duty steering and suspension
* Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC)
* Mechanical concepts
* Preventive maintenance

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
