**This is a hybrid position and offers the opportunity to work 50% of time remotely and 50% of time in the office.

Within established binding authority, analyze insurance submissions, recognize exposures, provide coverage alternatives, offer risk management suggestions, and adequately price insurance coverage on accounts of small to medium size and low complexity within company underwriting guidelines. Achieve corporate goals by reviewing account characteristics and taking appropriate action. Develop knowledge of insurance issues, products, trends in the market, and pricing principles. Foster positive business relationships with internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

Underwriter

*Senior level Underwriter will require advanced skills, knowledge and experience

    Within established binding authority and in compliance with filings, effectively write and retain profitable business to meet company objectives.
  • Using various sources of information, analyze, evaluate, make, and document decisions to achieve profitable underwriting results on transactions for prospective, new business, and existing customers. Recognize exposures to loss, identify coverage alternatives, develop risk management recommendations, and adequately price to an expected profitable level. Negotiate solutions keeping the customer in mind. Decline/nonrenew business not meeting underwriting standards.
  • Communicate with all customers professionally, respectfully, and timely. Communicate with supervisor on issues exceeding binding authority and through monthly letters on territory issues.
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with the sales force. Provide support in the production and service of profitable business. Explain and help develop an understanding of coverages, forms, guidelines, and underwriting philosophies.
  • Continue to develop underwriting knowledge to a higher level through an awareness of changes within underwriting territory; understanding Church Mutual and insurance industry coverages and policy forms; understanding religions, religious organizations, and operations specific to our niche; and professional knowledge development using external and internal opportunities.
  • Actively look for opportunities and recommend efficiencies to improve underwriting performance and processes. Recognize and promote change in a positive manner.
  • Focus to meet customer expectations through: meeting department timeliness expectations; assisting in territories as needed; and positive interactions with all customers (including sales, other departments, and technical support).
  • Miscellaneous.
    • Meet and travel with territory sales personnel as necessary.
    • Be a resource and share underwriting knowledge with others in the department. Provide training to others to expand their underwriting knowledge.

Essential Functions

  • Continue to develop underwriting knowledge and actively look for and recommend efficiencies to improve underwriting performance and processes.
  • Meet customer expectations through meeting department timeliness expectations, assisting in other territories, and positive interactions with all customers.
  • Meet or travel with territory sales personnel as necessary and be a resource to and train others within the department.

Necessary Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the underwriting function and insurance coverages and principles.
  • Knowledge of religions and religious organizations.
  • Proven ability to identify and analyze exposures, recognize areas of concern, and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Proven ability to make decisions outside parameter-based situations but within binding authority.
  • Proven ability to explain decisions to others and negotiate appropriate solutions.
  • Solid organizational skills.

Qualifications

Underwriter

* Bachelor's degree is strongly preferred. Associate in Underwriting designation or successful completion of two Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) courses may be considered in lieu of a degree.
* Typically requires 3+ years of relevant experience, preferably with a property and casualty insurance company in underwriting.
* Sufficient knowledge of the underwriting function, insurance coverages, and principles, including reinsurance application and administration.
* Exhibits the ability to identify and analyze exposures, recognize areas of concern, and develop appropriate solutions.
* Demonstrated ability to make decisions outside parameter-based situations but within binding authority.
* Proven ability to explain decisions to others and negotiate appropriate solutions.

Senior Underwriter

* Bachelor's degree is strongly preferred. Associate in Underwriting (AU) designation or successful completion of two Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) courses may be considered in lieu of a degree.
* Typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience, preferably with a property and casualty insurance company in underwriting.
* Ability and initiative to be self-directed.
* Recognize and be receptive to change opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
* Expertise of the underwriting functions, insurance coverages, and principles to handle highly complex insurance transactions, including reinsurance application and administration.
* Operate as a subject matter expert and leader for commercial underwriting.
* Demonstrated success in the ability to effectively identify and analyze exposures, recognize areas of concern, and develop appropriate solutions.
* Superior ability to make decisions outside parameter-based situations but within binding authority.
* Superior ability to explain decisions to others and negotiate appropriate solutions.

Necessary for all ranges
